Welcome to the First Unitarian Church of Alton! We are pleased you have found your way to our website, and perhaps to our way of doing religion. This is a free church, a church that is free of doctrine and creed, so it may be different from any church you have gone to before.
The First Unitarian Church of Alton is a welcoming and inclusive faith community committed to nurturing lifelong spiritual growth and to inspiring lives of love and service which strive toward justice and compassion for our community, our neighbors, and our world.
As we work to fulfill this mission and as we continue on our lifelong quests for continual learning and personal growth we covenant together:
- To seek fellowship with others on our spiritual journeys;
- To establish a caring community of acceptance and mutual respect;
- To foster compassion, integrity, and justice.
Rather than saying things we may not believe, or believing things we cannot understand, we try to live our lives according to a set of Principles and Purposes developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). You can find these guidelines and the sources from which they came by following the link to the UUA website.
We hold Sunday services in an historic sanctuary which is one of the loveliest and most inspiring places in Alton. We sing hymns, read words of prophetic men and women, honor milestones, share joys and concerns, and hear a message from our minister or a guest speaker. The church offers many other activities as well, and we invite you to attend any that interest you.
